Alberta Book ClubLinda Bozak

Linda Bozak's book club met in Turner Valley to talk about Our Father to the Fatherless. (for you easterners Turner Valley which is just southwest of Calgary, Alberta is where the first oil strike was made in 1948) It was a great success!

Here’s what they had to say.

Alberta Book Club"In October 2008, our Book Club gathered for our monthly meeting to discuss the book “Our Father ~ Father To the Fatherless”.  We were fortunate to be joined by the book’s authors Pastor Bruce Smith, via telephone, and Phil Kershaw in person.   It always enriches a book to discuss it after reading, but it’s even more fascinating to share that conversation with the authors.

Single mothers and blended families were not part of our life experiences; or were hunger, beatings and discrimination. It was truly eye opening, to realize the importance of fathers or in Bruce’s case the lack of them and how this fundamental fact impacts on a person’s life.

As the expression goes – “there but for the grace of God…” was certainly the lesson of the evening.   The even larger lesson was that Bruce Smith not only rose above his life’s challenges, but with the Lord’s help has gone on to make a difference in other young men’s lives.

In an effort to pass on the knowledge we gained from reading “Our Father,  Father To the Fatherless”, our Book Club has donated these books to local libraries in Calgary, as well as several rural libraries in southern Alberta.

"When so many families are imploding Chaplain Bruce Smith's OUR FATHER delivers a mighty lift of hope, help and healing to those enduring such turbulence. This book is a MUST READ for all members of families and those who work with families in turmoil."

"I wanted to take the time to acknowledge you for publishing and blessing men like me with the inspired "Our Father, Father to the Fatherless" book by Pastor Bruce Smith and Phil Kershaw. The book has impacted and inspired me so much that I have bought copies for several of the men in my life who I feel should be blessed as well. I have also had discussions with other men who have been greatly pleased with the book. Continued success in working with great people such as Pastor Bruce Smith and in your own personal and company's future endeavours. With Warm Regards"

Phil Carmichael

"I finished Bruce Smith's book in a weekend. What an inspiration. This morning I was reading Paul's gratitude for God's Mercy in Timothy chapter 1. To me these verses summed up what Bruce wrote about it.

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength to do his work. He considered me trustworthy and appointed me to serve him, even though I used to blaspheme the name of Christ. In my insolence, I persecuted his people. But God had mercy on me because I did it in ignorance and unbelief. Oh, how generous and gracious our Lord was! He filled me with the faith and love that come from Christ Jesus.

What a wonderful account of Bruce's life. Without an earthly Father, he thought he could manage his life on his own. But in the end it was proven that all the earthly riches cannot fulfill one's life. In the last few chapters I thought I would read about how Bruce is now receiving God's riches but instead I read about his repentance, and his giving back to society. It was no longer all about Bruce but was how the power of God in him was working for His Kingdom. I know what a life without an earthly father is, not in the same way Bruce experienced but because my father died when I was 16. I too have learned how to cope and put my trust in my Heavenly Father.

Thank you Bruce for telling us a story about a life filled with earthly riches that mean absolutely nothing until you put your trust in God and work for the glorification of His Kingdom. I look forward to meeting you in person someday to hear more."
